Hello, my name is Reez Bailey, and I’m running for City Council in Madison’s 4th District. Madison’s 4th District encompasses the downtown area and includes iconic locations like State Street, the Overture Center, and The Monona Terrace. I will be on the ballot in April of 2021. I am 19 years old, and I’m running for city council because I want to make a difference in our community. I want to help realize the vision of racial equality, environmental awareness, and economic security that inspires my generation.
I’ve lived in Madison my whole life and watching this community struggle through this pandemic has been very hard for me. It has been equally hard for me to watch the local Madison government act in ways that I do not always agree with. I’ve been disappointed with how our community has handled issues of racial justice, economic stability, and water safety. I feel as though there is a lack of leadership that is willing to listen to the people of Madison. Although our community has been clear in our call to action on important issues of racial and economic justice, the city government has been unable to act effectively. I feel as though the people are not being listened to.
I understand that these points may not be very nuanced, I am not a politician or an experienced orator. I’m just a citizen who’s tired of being ignored. I’m sick of waking up everyday dreading to read the news or worrying about my family contracting covid-19. I feel scared about the future of this community.
Now, I’m the first to admit that I don’t have all the answers and that I’m sometimes unsure. But that’s why I want to run, because I want to listen. I want to learn. I know that the people of this city feel just as unheard as I do, which is why I want to hear them.
No one can know everything,
but those who listen can learn anything
Given the opportunity, I would be honored to be the one that you, the people of this city, trust to speak frankly to. I might not be the most experienced politician on the ballot, and my ideas about issues might not align perfectly with yours, but I want to listen to you. I want to learn from you and let your voice be heard. Even if I don’t win the coming election in April, I will have been blessed to hear the many voices of the people of this city. I will have done my part in letting their voices be heard.
